Not-so-weekly Short Film: Joel Edgerton’s Bear

Bear-2Director, Joel Edgerton is at it again. This is his follow-up to the darkly comedic short film Spider, where one man’s prank on his girlfriend took a turn for the worse. Without giving anything away, I’ll just say that if you loved Spider, you’ll especially love Bear. You can see both his short films after the jump

Adam’s SFIFF56 Report: Day 5 – “Youth Works”, “Prince Avalanche” and “Ernest & Celestine” or “Ernest et Célestine”

Prince_Avalanche_03Having gotten up earlier than planned, thanks to my choosing to bunk with an energetic early bird, my start was an early one. I arrived at the theatre 2 hours before the start of my first movie. What happened then, you ask? Well I’ll tell ya what happened. Read More…

Not-so-weekly Short Film: 4 From Harmony Korine

Screen_shot_2011-09-28_at_44334_PMWhether it’s fair criticism or not, ever since his first penned script, Kids (1995) and his directorial debut, Gummo (1997), Harmony Korine has gained notoriety for being a filmmaker not afraid to shock audiences while exploring the depths of this thing called “normality”. Most recently Mr. Korine’s attack of the status quo can be seen in Spring Breakers (2013), a movie made on the exploitation of pop culture casting (heart throb of the moment, James Franco, and a couple of Mickey Mouse club kids) and marketed as a sexy non-stop party to the teen and college demographic. Those in on Korine’s joke though know better and will most likely revel in its sleeziness.

In celebration of Harmony Korine’s latest work, Spring Breakers, I’ve collected four of his short films that are each tiny little masterpieces in their own right. Which of these poetry in motion shorts, if any, is your favorite? Read More…

New Short Film by Mike Birbiglia featuring NPR’s Terry Gross

In preparation for his upcoming movie, Sleepwalk With Me, which opens in San Francisco on August 31st, comedian Mike Birbigla put together this short film, entitled Fresh Air 2: Too Fresh Too Furious.  Starring along Mike is NPR’s Terry Gross.  Who knew she could act?

Keeping with the NPR connection, Ira Glass, host of the radio show This American Life, co-wrote sleepwalk With Me.  That, and the fact that this short film is so funny, puts Birbiglia’s directorial feature-length debut to the top of my most anticipated comedies of the year.

This Week’s Short Film – One Day…

Long before Michel Gondry‘s creative playfulness went global with Eterenal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep he was making a name for himself by directing music videos and dabbling in short film.  In this short, Gondry explores his relationship with his own poo.  The film stars Michel Gondry as himself and comedian David Cross as Gondry’s poo.    That’s right, David Cross plays a piece of poo!  Follow the jump to see the movie and enjoy Read More…

This Week’s Short Film – T is For Toilet

Back in May it was announced that the ambitious horror anthology The ABCs of Death was in pre-production.  The concept being that 26 directors would each contribute a short horror and/or science fiction film to represent each letter of the alphabet.  The producers of this film have already secured some talented directors within the genre, such as Ti West (House of The Devil), Nacho Vigilando (Timecrimes), Jason Eisener (Hobo With A Shotgun), and many more.  All the letters in the film except for the letter T were assigned, so naturally the producers held a contest where anyone could submit their short film.  Out of all the film submissions T is For Toilet is by far my favorite.  Hopefully the judges pick this one to put in the film.  The winner of the contest will be announced on The ABCs of Death website on November 15th.  You can see a list of all the directors involved and all the short film submissions for the contest at their site.

Check out the short after the jump and keep in mind that even though it is claymation and contains a good deal of humor that it might not be suitable for children. Read More…

This Week’s Short Film – David Lynch’s The 3 Rs

While it might seem as if David Lynch hasn’t been doing much in the film medium since 2006′s Inland Empire, the fact is, as of late, it appears that he is honing in on his short film craft. After releasing the strange, well maybe not so strange in the world of Lynch, 16 minute short Lady Blue Shanghai last year he’s back with a one-and-a-half short called The 3 Rs. It’s current purpose for existing in our universe is as a promotional trailer for the upcoming 2011 Vienna International Film Festival. As for what it means as far as Lynch eventually coming back to direct a feature-length treat for us fans of his work, only time will tell.
